Important Update on Student Absences
Dear Families,
During the 2024 Legislative Session, changes were made to West Virginia Code §18-8-4, the law governing Compulsory School Attendance.
The focus of this law and corresponding polices is that ALL absences are a loss of instructional time. The West Virginia Legislature removed the term “leave of educational value” from the list of excused absences. As a result, local school districts are no longer able to approve educational leave for activities such as family vacations and other non-school activities during the school year.
We understand some families will inevitably choose to take vacations or engage in other non-school activities during the school year, including meaningful activities which may be of value to their children’s overall education. However, those absences are still absences from instructional time, even when they are worthwhile.
Loss of instructional time is an important issue for students’ long-term academic success. Some lost instructional time is unavoidable—such as when students are sick or have health-related appointments. The goal is to prioritize school attendance whenever possible.
We understand this change may require some adjustment, but we appreciate your partnership in ensuring that your child attends school regularly. Consistent attendance plays a vital role in supporting your child’s educational journey and ultimate success.
